Is it necessary to drill holes in the FT-891’s casing for installation?
No, absolutely not. The JSHIELD-891 rails utilise the existing threaded holes on the sides of the Yaesu FT-891 chassis. Installation is fully reversible and requires no modifications.
Do the rails obstruct access to the buttons or connectors?
No, the design has been carefully considered to allow unobstructed access to all front-panel controls as well as the side and rear connectors (microphone, power supply, antenna).
Can the radio be positioned vertically with these rails?
Yes, that’s one of the major advantages. The rails allow the radio to be positioned on its rear edge (provided the cables allow it) or to protect it if it is placed face-forward against a flat surface.
Is the added weight a significant issue for SOTA?
Weighing just 267g in total, the weight is negligible compared to the security it provides. It’s an excellent compromise for portable activities such as SOTA or POTA.
Are the screws supplied?
Yes, the kit includes the 4 screws needed to replace the original screws (which would be too short) as well as the appropriate Allen key.
