Using the GPS receiver to synchronise the time

When plugged in (either directly into the computer's USB-A socket or via the DR-891 with an auxiliary lead), the GPS dongle creates a serial port on the computer.

Go to the device manager to determine the COM port number. The entry for the GPS receiver will have the description "USB Serial Device" with VID/PID 0x1546/0x01A7.

The red LED indicates that the dongle is powered. Periodic flashing of the green LED indicates a successful GPS lock. If there is no lock after several minutes, try moving to an area with clear skies.

Download, install and configure software that will use GPS signals for time synchronisation. The dongle in this kit has been successfully tested with the free application BktTimeSync on Windows. Microsoft Defender may object to the installation, which you should ignore to continue.

When the application starts, select the serial port from the list that corresponds to the entry in the Device Manager. Uncheck the Enable NTP option and check the Enable GPS option to synchronise the time in disconnected mode. All other settings can remain unchanged.

Note that the application displays the WW locator based on the coordinates, so you don't have to look them up when configuring the ham radio application. There is also an option to send it to WSJT-X directly from the application.
