Summary

The President RICHARD II amateur radio transceiver is a powerful and versatile mobile model designed for radio enthusiasts operating on the 10m and 12m decametre bands. Developed by President Electronics, it combines robustness, modern ergonomics and adjustable power output for mobile or fixed-base operation. Its cutting-edge features, such as NRC digital audio processing and USB-C fast charging, make it an essential piece of kit for both DX and local operations.

Key features

  • Independent NRC noise processing: Active digital noise reduction, configurable separately for transmission and reception, ensuring perfectly clear sound.
  • High DX power: Delivers up to 40 W in FM and 50 W PEP in AM, with the option of software-based power limiting (4 W / 10 W) depending on operational requirements.
  • Front-panel USB-C fast charging port: USB Type-C port delivering up to 20W (5V/3A, 9V/2.22A, 12V/1.67A) to power smartphones and accessories directly from the radio.
  • Dual standby and comprehensive audio filters: Features ASC, Noise Blanker (NB), Automatic Noise Limiter (ANL) and a Hi-Cut filter to eliminate ignition interference and background noise when operating on the move.
  • Digital SWR meter and safety alerts: Direct SWR measurement with audible signal and built-in protection against overvoltage and excessive SWR to safeguard the output stage.
  • Advanced customisation: Backlit LCD display with 7 interchangeable colours, 6-tone Roger Beep function, adjustable talkback and built-in echo.

FAQ

Do I need an amateur radio licence to use the President RICHARD II?

Yes. As it transmits on the 10-metre and 12-metre amateur bands with a power output of up to 40W, you must hold an amateur radio operator’s certificate (HAREC licence) to transmit legally.

What is the purpose of the built-in NRC filter?

The NRC (Noise Reduction Circuit) filter applies digital signal processing to filter out atmospheric background noise and radio interference. On the RICHARD II, it can be adjusted independently for reception, to ensure comfortable listening, and for transmission, to ensure clear voice transmission.

Can the radio be connected directly to a 24V lorry battery?

No, the RICHARD II is powered exclusively by a 13.8 V DC supply. For installation in a heavy goods vehicle powered by 24 V, the use of a suitable 24 V/12 V voltage converter (rated at least 10 A) is essential.

Is it necessary to adjust the SWR before the first transmission?

Yes, as with any high-power HF transmitter, you must check and tune your antenna to achieve a TOS of less than 1.5 before modulating. The unit features a calibrated TOS meter and a safety shut-off system should the TOS become too high.

Can the transceiver be programmed via the USB Type-C port?

No, the front-panel USB-C port is exclusively for power supply and fast charging (Quick Charge / Power Delivery) of portable devices (smartphones, tablets or receivers) up to 20 W.
