* Power: The values of 30 W in digital modes and 50 W in SSB are the maximum power levels specified by Digirig and tested by the designer. These are not safe power levels to be maintained continuously under all conditions. In FT8, RTTY, or other high-duty-cycle modes, the compact FT-82-43 49:1 toroidal transformer operates continuously, and its temperature rise depends directly on the installation.
To safely approach the maximum power, the antenna must have a low SWR on a band where the wire is resonant (avoid pushing the power on a band tuned by the tuner).
You’ll also need a few meters of coaxial cable, whose shield acts as a counterweight. On the 40M version used on the 40-meter band, the transformer runs hotter than on the 20-meter band, which calls for a bit more caution.
For long FT8 sessions in POTA/SOTA, we recommend staying around 20 W which makes no noticeable difference in propagation and checking the temperature of the unit’s casing by touch after the first few transmission cycles. In SSB, since the average power is much lower than the peak power, 50 W PEP poses no problem.
