The Pocket HF A25W antenna is a portable HF wire antenna, waterproof, of the EFHW (End Fed Half Wave) type, fed at the end of the wire via a 1:49 impedance transformer (balun), for reception from 1 to 30 MHz and transmission on 40m, 20m, 15m and 10m.Compact, lightweight and housed in a waterproof case, it is designed for amateur radio activities on the go, QRP, hiking, SOTA/POTA, field or temporary installation.

  • Antenna type: EFHW - End Fed Half Wave
    • The Pocket HF Antenna A25W is an end-fed half-wave antenna.
    • An EFHW uses a resonant or near-resonant wire, fed at one end instead of being fed in the center like a traditional dipole.
    • This type of antenna has a high impedance at the feed point, hence the use of a 49:1 or 1:49 impedance transformer to match it to a 50 Ω coaxial radio output.
  • Operating principle
    • The radiating wire of about 20 meters corresponds to a typical length for an EFHW intended for the 40-meter band, with possible operation on certain harmonic bands.
    • Thanks to the 1:49 transformer, the high impedance at the end of the wire is lowered to allow connection to a 50 Ω HF transceiver.
    • This architecture allows for multiband use on the announced bands: 40m, 20m, 15m, and 10m.
    • As with any EFHW antenna, actual performance depends on height, clearance, ground, radio environment, and deployment quality.
  • Installation and deployment
    • Connect the 1:49 matching unit to the radio or coaxial line.
    • Deploy the radiating wire of about 20 meters without letting it coil on itself.
    • Install the end of the wire on an insulating support: tree, fiberglass mast, telescopic pole, high point, or cord.
    • Keep the wire away from metal structures, power lines, gutters, fences, vehicles, and other conductive elements.
    • Check the SWR before transmission, ideally with an antenna analyzer or the transceiver's SWR meter.
    • Respect the maximum power levels indicated according to the mode used.
  • Possible configurations
    • Horizontal: wire stretched between two high points, useful for temporary or semi-fixed installation.
    • Sloper / inclined: unit near the ground or at operator height, end of the wire raised towards a high point; very practical configuration for portable use.
    • Inverted V: center or high part of the wire placed on a mast, ends brought down towards the ground; useful when space is limited.
    • Partial vertical or rising wire: wire raised with a fiberglass pole or tree, useful in limited space, with particular attention to clearance and common mode currents.
    • Rapid field deployment: the antenna can be set up in a few minutes for a portable QRP station, provided there is a hanging point or a light mast.
